Mysore style self-practice classes

Traditional Mysore-Style Ashtanga Yoga in Manchester

Experience Ashtanga Yoga as it has been traditionally taught in Mysore, India.

In this unique class format, you practice at your own pace and in your own time, learning postures one by one.

You’ll only move on when you can either remember the sequence or have mastered the posture to the best of your ability.

This means you’ll never have to memorise more than two or three new postures at a time.

The teacher is there to guide you, offering personalised adjustments and support as needed.

Often described as a one-to-one class in a group setting, this approach ensures that your practice is tailored to your individual needs and abilities.

This class is suitable for everyone, from complete beginners to advanced practitioners.

If you’re more familiar with led classes, cheat sheets are available to help you transition to this style of learning.

Important Note: This is not a led class. You won’t follow a teacher at the front of the room. Instead, you’ll work at your own pace, while the teacher moves around the room to provide guidance and support.

This rolling 4-week course is designed for complete beginners, guiding you step by step through the transformative practice of Ashtanga yoga.

You’ll learn postures in small, manageable chunks, giving you the time and space to fully absorb each movement. Repetition of postures is encouraged, helping you commit them to memory while gently building stamina and opening your body to the practice.

at the end of each week you’ll have a short sequence of postures that you can confidently practice at home or in class, building every week until by the end of the four weeks you'll have the standing postures and some of the seated postures.

This foundation will set you up to grow your practice over time, adding more postures as you progress—just as Ashtanga yoga is traditionally taught.

As Krishnamacharya wisely said, “If you can breathe, you can do yoga.”

This course truly is suitable for everyone, no matter your age or fitness level.

Take this opportunity to discover the easiest and most authentic way to learn Ashtanga yoga.

Ashtanga Beginners are also welcome to join us in the Mysore class on Fridays and Sundays but be prepared to do a bit of repetition as that's the only way to fully remember the postures.

This is a great way to begin an Ashtanga practice as you only have to remember small amounts of postures at any one time and are given time to embed those postures in your memory before moving on.

So its also easy on your body because you have time to build up strength and stamina

This way you remember the postures for life. It is best to book a five class pass for this.

A one to one class is an ideal way to tailor the practice to your own needs and work on the postures you need more help with.

We can bring the class to you, in your home at a time that suits you.

It’s a great way to begin your yoga practice, to help you to feel more confident when attending a busy class. You can work on alignment and breath and Bandha to make sure you get it right.

It is a great way to deepen an already established practice, with individual attention to help you to progress with postures that you may feel stuck on. Or maybe you are returning to your practice after having a break from it and feel that you might benefit from a little one to one attention to help you to keep up in class.
